Restaurants In West Country

The West Country is the area of England which includes the counties of Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset, although other smaller areas are sometimes also referred to as being in the West Country.  Bristol is a classic example of this.

Devon and Cornwall are classically the West Country though, and are the areas that a lot of people think of automatically when they think of the West Country.  And if yuo should get peckish while you are on your travels down there, try out some of the following suggestions for finding good restaurants in the West Country.

Combe House Restaurant in Honiton

This is an informal restaurant which is ideal if you want to feel comfortable when enjoying a meal while on holiday in Devon.  Dry cured meat dishes are their speciality here, and a lot of the ingredients used in the Combe House recipes are sourced from local suppliers and regions.  This is a true gem that is well worth a visit.

The Bay Restaurant in Penzance

Penzance is a great location right down in deepest Cornwall, and it has an outdoor deck as well.  This gives wonderful views out onto the water on Mount’s Bay, so as well as the great food you also have a wonderful location to eat in.  There are separate lunch and dinner menus, and as you would expect in this region you will see plenty of fish on the menu.  They even have a nine course tasting menu if you would like to try something a bit different.

GidleighPark in Devon

Situated in the village of Chagford, this restaurant has earned a two star rating from the Michelin guide.  It may be slightly pricey but there is an a la carte menu that is well worth a look.  This has been rated as one of the best restaurants in the whole of the UK, not just the West Country, so you can see it has a lot to offer.

Jamaica Inn on Bodmin

Bodmin Moor is a brooding place to visit, and it is also the home of Jamaica Inn, the inn made famous in Daphne Du Maurier’s novel.  It has a casual restaurant that is ideal if you are walking in the area or staying nearby.  Drop in for a nice pub lunch or go later in the day for a nice dinner.  Expect traditional pub fare that is ideal for filling a large gap.

Watch out for other delightful restaurants throughout the West Country too

If you are on a walking holiday in this part of the world it is particularly worthwhile to plan ahead and see if you can find out where the best UK restaurants guides are before you set off on your travels.  You can then book ahead and look forward to a great meal when your walk is over.
